Children’s Ministries
After the
Children’s Sermon, children through the sixth grade are invited to attend
Sunday School. Our Christian Education Director, Wendy Rosa, leads a
creative hour of Bible study, craft and activities.
We follow the guided United Church of Christ
curriculum, Bible Quest. The program is designed to teach the
overall story of the Bible. Students learn basic skills to become faithful
interpreters of God’s word and they discuss ways that the weekly lessons can
be applied to their every day life. Activities are tailored to the
abilities and interests of the students.
Recent lessons focused on the Easter story.
Attention turned to a variety of Jesus’ teachings that encourage us to
trust and rejoice in God’s daily presence. They will soon study the life
and teachings the Apostle Peter, who not only showed us how everyone is
important to God, but how we can discern and follow God’s vision of a brand
new world.
Youth
Ministries
Older youth attend worship with their parents.
Every other year, we offer a Confirmation Class
for students who are in the 7th and 8th grade. After
an initial six-week program that focuses on basic Christian theology, church
history and UCC government, students are paired with an adult mentor and
walk through a guided study of personal faith and discipleship. A final
series of classes focuses on the colorful history of North Greenwich
Congregational Church and the meaning of Church membership. Those students
who decide to join the Church are invited to meet with the Board of Deacons
for a final “inquisition” and pizza party!!
The Church also sponsors a monthly Youth
Fellowship. Students in Middle School and High School meet monthly for
fellowship and mission. We normally have one “fun’ activity every month,
such as bowling, scavenger hunts, and capture the flag at Todd’s Point. We
make an annual trip to Silver Lake Conference Center for “team building”
through a Ropes Course Training program. We participate in food preparation
for our congregation’s Midnight Run Outreach to the homeless in New York
City. We have also joined Town of Greenwich in various “clean up” events,
helped train “seeing eye” dogs through the Good Dog Foundation, and assisted
in a local meal program at a nearby shelter. As the ministry grows, we will
expand our community service program.
Adult
Ministries
Royal leads a number of Adult Education
Discussion Groups throughout the year. Most of these study opportunities
are designed to reflect on Christian faith as it is lived in the context of
current affairs. We have studied Islam, engaged in an in depth analysis of
Mel Gibson’s controversial film, The Passion, and its impact on the
Jewish Community. In this year’s annual Lenten study, we debated moral
values as we critiqued Jim Wallis’ challenging bestseller, “God’s Politics:
Why the Right Gets It Wrong and the Left Doesn’t Get It.” This spring, we
introduced a new “monthly” adult discussion group. Before worship on the
fourth Sunday of each month, we offer a single hour discussion on a hot
topic. Our kick-off meeting took a look at Jack Welch’s new book, “Winning.”
We examined a number of issues, including the nature of success, leadership,
corporate take-overs and balancing work and family.
Royal will offer a mid-week Bible Study in the
Fall.
